2008: Averill threw limited innings with both the Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners organization before retiring in August.
2007: Averill missed the entire 2007 season due to Tommy John Surgery. He entered Spring Training with the expectation of starting the year in Lakeland, Florida with the Class A Lakeland Tigers. Averill underwent surgery in April at the Kerlan & Jobe Clinic performed by Dr. Louis Yocum. Yocum described the ligament as looking as if it had been through a paper shredder and that it was most likely torn back in 2002. Averill spent the season rehabing at Fischer Sports & Therapy in Phoenix, Arizona. Fischer is considered one of the premier sports rehabilitation and conditioning faciIities in the country. Averill rehabbed along side Randy Johnson, Kerri Wood, Jason Schmidt, and Mike Hampton.
2006: Averill spent his first full season at Low Class A West Michigan playing for the Whitecaps. His season was highlighted by winning both the first and second half crowns of the Midwest League before winning the Championship Title. During the regular season Averill was 9-8 in 28 starts with a 3.74 E.R.A. Throwing a league leading 171 innings pitched. His strikeout to walks ratio was better than 2:1 with 111K’s and 48BB’s. His season was highlighted by not allowing a single earned run in the Midwest League Playoffs. He went 2-0 over 11.2 innings with a 0.00 E.R.A. His best performance came in the final championship game striking out seven over six innings to clinch the league title over Kane County.
2005: Averill was selected in the 20th Round by the Tigers in the June 2005 Amateur Draft in. He agreed to terms with the Tigers at the end of July and spent a short season down in the Gulf Coast League only making 3 starts. He threw a total of 22.2 innings posting a 1.59 E.R.A.
